FAQ

  • Intimacy Coordinators (ICs) work on scenes in film and television that contain nudity/hyper-exposed work, simulated sex, and intimate physical contact.

We advocate for actors, liaise between talent and production, and coach choreographry/movement.

  • Great question! There are more scenes that fall under “hyper-exposed work” or “intimate physical contact” than you may think.

Intimacy Coordinators can work on scenes involving:

    • Giving Birth

    • Kissing

    • Implied Nudity or Genital Stimulation

    • And more!

If you’re still unsure if an IC could serve your project, feel free to reach out to me.

    • Support a safe environment during challenging scenes

    • Coordinate between production departments to help bring the director’s vision to life

    • Aid in reducing financial, insurance or market related risks

    • Can prevent unnecessary delays in production

  • THE SHORT ANSWER

    No.

    THE LONGER ANSWER

This is an ongoing conversation in the intimacy professional world. Currently, SAG doesn’t require an IC to be certified. There are multiple ways intimacy coordinators can get the education and experience they need. One path is certification. Another is to take classes that cover the same topics as a certification program along with set experience as outlined by SAG. Lots of successful, qualified intimacy professionals have made careers without getting certified.

    THE LONGER ANSWER

Chelsea Pace, the founder of Theatrical Intimacy Education, has an amazing article on The Certification Question.

So how do you know if an IC is right for your project? Here are questions to ask and qualities to look for in an intimacy coordinator.

  • Nope!

Production companies have their own HR departments, which we’re completely separate from.

Just like having a Stunt Coordinator doesn’t mean you’ll have fewer stunts, having an Intimacy Coordinator doesn’t mean you’ll have less sex or nudity.

We’re there to help bring your vision to life.
